Esher and Claygate

The pretty and popular commuter town of Esher in Surrey sits on the old London to Portsmouth road, 14 miles south-west of central London, and attracts loyalty from Londoners who move out for country air and good comprehensive schools. The area is highly desirable and perfectly suited for commuters. There are a number of excellent local schools as well as a vibrant high street with many boutiques, restaurants and bars.

Claygate was formerly part of the parish of Thames Ditton but the church of Holy Trinity was built at Claygate in 1840 and the village became a separate parish a year later. The church was extended in 1860 to cope with the increasing population. There is now a small selection of shops on the main road leading to the Station. Quiet residential roads and small private avenues make up the majority of the residential housing areas.

Rail: Fast trains from Esher station to Waterloo take 31 minutes and 32 minutes from Claygate.

Bus: Esher and Claygate have regular service routes. Routes take journeys through to Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden and Wimbledon. Transfer to Kingston bus station and there are over 30 routes available in to and out of central London.

Road: 4 miles from the M25, Esher and Claygate has excellent road connections via the A3, providing good access into central London.

Amenities

Situated on a direct train line to Waterloo, the area has benefited from the “south-west London effect”, with many families cashing in on the growth in property prices in south west London and moving out to Esher and Claygate to get more outdoor space and comparative value. This is also an area popular with professional sportspeople and celebrities — the Chelsea F.C. training ground is in nearby Cobham — who buy large, newly built mansions.

There are a variety of local attractions, from the Daytona Raceway to the famous Sandown Park RacecourseClaremont Landscape Garden offers a peaceful retreat for visitors, and there is a local cinema on Esher high street.

Sandown Racecourse

Most other racecourses evolved from misty, Medieval origins, but Sandown Park was the first purpose built racecourse with enclosures, designed to be a leisure destination.

Sandown Park was the Queen Mother’s favourite course and provided a suitably impressive backdrop to the feats of Arkle, Mill Reef and Desert Orchid. Yet it has always developed in sympathy with the spirit of the times and is now one of the most modern and accessible racing venues in the country.

Jockey Club Racecourses own and operates 15 racecourses in the UK. As well as staging some of the highest quality racing in the country, we own some of the country’s most inspiring and flexible spaces for holding conferences, concerts and exhibitions as well as many other events.

 

Claremont Landscape Gardens

Steeped in nearly 300 years of history, this 18th garden is a green oasis in the heart of Surrey within easy reach of London. Once a Dukes’ retreat and a playground for princesses, Claremont has always been somewhere to escape everyday life and enjoy simple pleasures with family and friends.

Many of the great names in garden history played a part in the creation and development of the estate. Over the years Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and ‘Capability’ Brown all put their own distinctive stamp on the pleasure grounds, which were part of the foremost royal residence in the country.
