New Malden

New Malden is part of the Royal Borough of Kingston and is less than a 10 minute drive from Kingston town centre but it provides a distinctly different lifestyle to the busier and more commercial town centre. A highly residential area with fantastic amenities, excellent schools and several parks, it is perfect for young and older families alike. New Malden high street has changed a lot over the last few years as the local demographic has, having been predominantly banks and supermarkets, it now offers a much wider range of amenities as shown by the opening of some excellent restaurants and bars. New Malden station provides direct access to Waterloo Station within 25 minutes and the bus routes allow its residents to get to Wimbledon, Surbiton and Kingston with ease. For the drivers, the A3 is also near by. The area provides golf courses, tennis courts, gyms and activity centres for children, particularly the Malden Centre.

Rail: Fast trains from New Malden station to Waterloo take 25 minutes, or Victoria can be reached in 40 minutes via Clapham Junction.

Bus: New Malden has direct access to nearby locations including Worcester Park, Kingston, Wimbledon and other towns in the area. By transferring to Kingston’s regular service there is further access to over 30 routes. Numbers 65 (to Ealing), 85 (to Putney) and 281 (to Hounslow) take passengers north and east, while the 406 (to Epsom) and 515 (to Guildford) travel into Surrey.

Road:  9 miles from the M25, New Malden has excellent road connections via the A3 which is less than 1 mile away, providing good access into central London.

Amenities

New Malden has its own sports centre, the Malden Centre, which includes a swimming pool, gym and community facilities. It also runs several adult learning courses. Beverley Park provides a football pitch, tennis courts, children’s playground, allotments and open space.

There is an annual Malden Fortnight, which is a parade showcasing all the local schools and community groups and various other activities. Each Christmas the high street is festooned with Christmas lights with its own switching-on ceremony. The choir from Christ Church School in New Malden sing Christmas carols to the townsfolk. New Malden has its own youth theatre, the Green Theatre Company, established in 1986 in a converted cricket pavilion at Barton Green.

The area’s last cinema, the Odeon at Shannon Corner on the A3 has closed and been replaced by a large retail area including several large stores. The other cinema in the high street (corner of Sussex Road) burnt down on Boxing Day 1936. There was also a silent cinema on Coombe Road by the station, which became the New Malden Gentlemen’s Club in 1923; this closed in August 2010, and is now a Korean karaoke and pool bar. New Malden also has its own “Dino-Golf” course, 18 holes of dinosaur themed crazy golf overlooking the A3. As well as a floodlit golf driving range.

The Bentall Centre

The nearby Bentall Centre contains 75 stores offering over 1000 brands from fashion to food and drink. It is located in the heart of Kingston, and offers a huge selection of both designer and high street brands under one roof. Korean Connections

New Malden is home to Europe’s most thriving Korean expatriate population, contributing to New Malden’s thriving 20,000 Korean population. New Malden has nearly 20 Korean cafes and restaurants, a high-end karaoke bar, supermarkets and a newspaper, the Free NK. Churches throughout the neighbourhood regularly conduct Korean services.

New Malden is mostly made up of period properties (both large houses and smaller cottages) as well as a high number of 1930’s semi-detached homes. As the local area and high street has changed and modernised over the last few years there has also been an emergence of new build homes, both flats and houses. As New Malden is such a desirable area, it is good to know that there are also a number of long standing residents who are now looking to sell and move, meaning that for the new buyers there is a chance to buy unmodernised and unextended homes for a reasonable price so that they can put their own stamp on it and really make it their own.
