Teddington is located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Historically in the former county of Middlesex, it is on the north bank of the Thames just after the start of a long meander, between Hampton Wick and Strawberry Hill, Twickenham. It stretches from the Thames to Bushy Park with a long high street reaching down to pubs, restaurants, leisure facilities, fields and fitness clubs by the riverside, and has a pedestrian suspension bridge over the lowest non-tidal lock on the Thames, Teddington Lock. Teddington has no dual carriageways or high-rise residential buildings and its centre comprises mid-rise urban development.
Hampton is a peaceful suburban area on the north bank of the River Thames, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Hampton includes the park-facing main streets and mews buildings of Hampton Court which became rebuilt and reconfigured as a Royal Palace. Hampton is served by two railway stations, including one north of Hampton Hill and one immediately south of Hampton Court Bridge in East Molesey.
Hampton has a number of boutiques, bars and restaurants along the high street and in neighbouring Hampton Hill. The Hampton Heated Open Air Pool is very popular with adults and children and one of the few such swimming pools remaining in Greater London, also host to open air concerts. The riverside, on the reach above Molesey Lock, has many period buildings including Garrick’s House and Shakespeare’s Temple, also on the river is the Astoria Houseboat recording studio. Hampton Ferry provides access across the Thames to East Molesey.
Teddington has a number of boutiques as well as a selection of well known bar and restaurant chains. Teddington has it’s own riding school, Park Lane Stables. Horses travel into Bushy Park to enjoy group hacks, private lessons or independent riding to a stunning backdrop. A footbridge across the lock from Hampton leads to Teddington village where the Landmark Arts Centre is based and hosts concerts, arts and crafts fairs and exhibitions.
One of the most well known and historically significant buildings, Henry VIII’s favourite royal residence was Hampton Court Palace. Visitors can immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the bustling Base Court and marvel at the breath-taking grandeur of Henry’s State Rooms, stroll through over 60 acres of enchanting gardens and lose themselves in the famous maze. Audio guides are included in the palace ticket and costumed tours and talks happen daily, as well as an excellent programme of seasonal events. more…
Every year millions of Londoners and tourists visit Bushy Park, the second largest of the capital’s eight Royal Parks. Located near Hampton Court Palace, Bushy Park’s mixture of woods, gardens, ponds and grassland makes it a fantastic place to enjoy wildlife with roaming herds of Red and Fallow Deer. The park is also home to the famous Chestnut Avenue, a formal Baroque water garden and the beautiful Diana Fountain.
Hampton and nearby Teddington mainly comprises a combination of old and new; from Victorian and Edwardian cottages and small family homes to new build apartments and townhouses. There are several semi-new developments as well as a selection of Victorian conversion flats and maisonettes.
There are several areas of particular interest and desirability. Often called the “river roads”, Broom Water and Broom Water West back on to an artificially created creek and are highly desirable locations. Teddington Park Road and Waldegrave Park offer spacious family homes. On the southern end of Twickenham Road there is a row of detached, pebble-dashed houses in the Arts & Crafts style which are listed as being of townscape merit. There are pretty Victorian villas and terraces in the Park Road conservation area close to Teddington station.
Hampton has a wide range of homes, from period cottages to Georgian houses, Victorian terraces, semi-detached and detached houses and houses and flats from the Twenties onwards. At Taggs Island, on the Thames, close to Hampton, there are houseboats ranging from the ramshackle to the glamorous.
